Interracial Indigenous Wedding at Sunwolf Riverside Resort in Squamish BC
When Amy & Brendan were finally able to have their wedding in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, it had been over a year since they had seen much of their family. The couple was so excited to see everyone again and they really wanted the day to be special.
Although Amy is estranged from her biological father she really wanted to honour her Indigenous heritage by having the ceremony out in nature and wore earrings made of porcupine quills and chose an officiant that could honour her family’s heritage. We always love working with Abigail Fisher-Lang at Life Threads Ceremonies – her ceremonies are always so heartfelt and honour the couple’s story and heritage. We’ve done many weddings with Abigail over the years and her work is always so meaningful – and as a BIPOC wedding photography team it is especially important to us that couples feel their heritages, histories, and family stories are told accurately and respectfully.
The ceremony took place in the middle of the return of the salmon run as well, which was especially meaningful to Amy, even if it meant we had to traverse a few salmon lined trails as bears dragged salmon up into the woods to nourish the soils! Since the wedding was outdoors at Sunwolf Riverside Resort, the couple was also able to bring their furbaby along for the wedding and guests were able to bring their dogs along as well. It was really cool to attend such a pooch-friendly wedding.
When Amy’s step father walked her down the aisle it was an emotional moment for everyone and Brad and I find it hard to hold back our own tears. One other quick thing to note: Amy’s family surprised her with her grandmother’s china as the place settings on the head table – a ways of ensuring Grandma was there with them in spirit for their special day.
What do you think of this gorgeous autumn wedding – are the colours stunning or what?
