East Van Culture Engagement Session

A few weeks back we hit up Commercial Drive with Jess & Scott to document their lives in East Van. This was one of my favourite engagement sessions to date, because I just love East Van culture. First we hit up The Storm Crow Tavern where we played some boardgames, ate some vegan chickpea fries and had some beers and laughed a lot, then wandered along the drive to check out some murals done by local artists and get a little goofy, before hitting up Pulp Fiction and then grabbing a couple slices of pizza.

What I love most about Scott and Jess is that they are so down to earth (and they give the best hugs). I am always so grateful to meet people who just let me into their lives and let me document them in a real honest way. I think it makes the images so much more meaningful down the road.

I think a lot of wedding photographers out there get caught up in aesthetic and beauty (which of course is important) but they forget that they are documenting someone’s real life –  not just a model who needs to look “pretty” to sell some product in a magazine, but real people who have a beautiful story about love. That’s something I never want to forget. I always want to honour the fact that people are coming to me with their real stories, their real lives, and are trusting me to capture that in an honest and compelling way.
