Romantic Waterfall Portrait Session at Widgeon Falls

Okay I full admit it: I am a waterfall fiend.
I feel like I’m willing to hike almost any hike, if the reward is a waterfall or a spectacular view at the end. Widgeon Falls is one of my most favourite locations to shoot a waterfall portrait session.

The hike is not the easiest one, because it requires a 90 minute canoe ride to get to the base of the hike. Once you get to the other shore, its about a 60 minute hike in. The hike itself is moderate, so you’ll need some endurance and lots of water. You need to give yourself a good 5-6 hours of canoeing/hiking time to do it, plus you’ll want some time to hang around in the falls.

I like to do this hike in late summer, however Widgeon creek tends to be low at that time of the year, which means there are some areas where you need to carry the canoe because it’s too shallow to paddle. The plus side? Because the falls are less intense you can actually splash around and chill in the pools above the falls (obviously not too close to the actual falls.) The pools are nice and cold, so they are perfectly refreshing after a hike on a hot day.

We shot this waterfall portrait session in late spring, so the falls were still raging with fresh mountain run off and we definitely weren’t doing any swimming but they were stunning to water the water roar over the cracks and crevasses.
