Whistler Wedding Photographer | Rock the Frock

If you haven’t already heard of a “Rock the Frock” session then listen up, because it’s definitely something to consider!

Next day portrait sessions, commonly called Rock The Frock sessions, or Trash the Dress sessions have become a popular option for many brides and grooms recently. There are a lot of really great reasons to have a next day portrait session:

YOU DON’T HAVE TO RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK
Time is always an issue on the day of a wedding. The ceremony start time and dinner start time are often non-negotiable. This means that the bride and groom have to be at a certain place by a certain time. First looks are a good way of compromising as all of the portraits are shot ahead of time. But what if the bride and groom don’t want to see each other before the wedding? With a next day portrait session you can quickly shoot wedding party portraits and family portraits between the ceremony and reception, and just leave the bridal portraits to the next day. Guests aren’t left waiting for hours, and the couple gets to enjoy the party they are throwing. Photographers also enjoy the luxury of time. It means we have time to think about each shot, and take the time to set up lights if we need to.

YOU CAN PICK THE TIME OF DAY
Natural light is most beautiful when the sun is coming up or going down. Unfortunately this is not when most weddings happen. Most wedding ceremonies happen in the middle of the afternoon with portraits after. This is when the sun is least flattering. That being said with a rock the frock session you can choose a romantic sunrise shoot, or a dramatic sunset shoot, and can rest assured your pictures will be beautiful and unique.

Without the constraints of time we could set up lights for this mid-day shot.

IT’S NOT WEATHER PERMITTING
If it rains on your wedding day fear not! You can always schedule a session for when the weather is better so you can have the pictures you’ve always dreamed about. No need to worry about frizzy hair or soggy shoes!

IT’S A LOW PRESSURE SHOOT
Just like an engagement session the only people around are the photographers and the bride and groom. Without all your guests gawking and aww-ing at you it’s a lot easier to be genuine, romantic and intimate. You pictures will have more emotion if you can get into the moment without the stress of the wedding on your mind.

YOU CAN CHOOSE A WILD LOCATION
Want to shoot at the top of a mountain? You can do it. Want to shoot out on a lake? You can do it. Want to shoot underwater? You can do it. Heck, if you wanted to shoot on the moon and it was within your budget you could do it! Without the constraints of time you can go anywhere you want for portraits, which means a location that means a lot to you – like the coffee shop where you met, or the trail where you and your beau hike on the weekends.

Harmony Lake was a bit of a hike but well worth the view.

YOU CAN GET DOWN AND DIRTY AND HAVE FUN
You can get those incredible pictures without having to worry about getting back to your reception with a pristine white dress. You don’t have to get wet or roll in the mud (unless you want to) but you can walk through trails to incredible lookout points, or walk along a sandy feat or lean against a tree without the fear of getting your dress a little dirty. After all, when are you going to wear it again?
